HH-66 vs Standard PVC Glues

What’s the Difference and When to Use It

When you’re repairing inflatables, patching PVC tarps, joining pond liners or fixing marquee windows, the adhesive you choose determines whether the repair lasts weeks—or years. Two common options get lumped together online as “PVC glue”, but they work very differently.

HH-66 Vinyl Cement (RH Adhesives) is a solvent-welding adhesive designed for PVC and vinyl (including PVC-coated fabrics). It softens the surfaces so they fuse into one flexible, waterproof bond.

By contrast, “standard PVC glue” usually refers to plumbing solvent cement for rigid PVC pipe and fittings, or a contact cement that creates a surface bond rather than a weld.

Solvent-Weld vs Surface Stick

The key difference comes down to how the bond forms. HH-66 temporarily softens PVC and vinyl surfaces; as the solvent flashes off, the plastics re-harden together. It’s more of a weld than a glue, giving excellent peel strength and flexibility.

Standard PVC and contact cements, on the other hand, grip the surface rather than welding into it. They provide a good initial grab, but because they don’t fuse the material, the bond can lift at edges under flex, heat or immersion.

Flexibility also separates the two. HH-66 cures with a flexible finish, making it ideal for fabric-reinforced PVC, inflatables and moving seams. Standard pipe or contact cements often cure rigid, meaning they can crack or shear when the material bends.

When it comes to water resistance, HH-66 is the clear winner. Once cured, it’s fully waterproof and suitable for sustained wet exposure—perfect for pond liners, marine inflatables and tarp patches. Most contact or pipe cements are only water-resistant and aren’t designed for constant immersion.

Cure times also vary. HH-66 tacks in minutes and reaches handling strength quickly, though you should allow around 24 hours (longer in cold or humid weather) before applying heavy load or immersing. Contact cements usually have an open time of 5–15 minutes with a full cure in 24–48 hours, while pipe solvent cement sets fast on rigid PVC but won’t work for flexible fabrics.

When to Use HH-66

If you’re repairing flexible PVC to PVC—or PVC-coated fabrics—HH-66 is the right choice. Typical jobs include:

  • Inflatables (boats, rafts, SUPs, towables): Perfect for patches, seam touch-ups and securing D-ring bases.
  • PVC tarps and truck curtains: Strong edge and peel resistance for patching tears, fixing hems and reinforcing tie-down points.
  • Pond liners and water features: Reliable for overlaps and corner patches that sit underwater once cured.
  • Marquees and clear PVC windows: Bonds panels and trims without creating brittle seams.

Application Tips

  • Surface prep: Clean with a solvent wipe; lightly abrade glossy PVC if needed.
  • Apply thin coats: Brush onto both surfaces and allow them to become tacky before mating.
  • Roll firmly: Use a roller to eliminate air bubbles and ensure full contact.
  • Allow to cure: Keep supported and dry, leaving ~24 hours before loading or immersion.
  • Touch-ups: HH-66 Thinner can reactivate a surface for repairs and clean your tools.
